1.4 Out
Published: July 6, 2009

Dear Noise.io users,

Noise.io Pro v. 1.4 which brings back sound in OS3.0 is now available from the AppStore as a free update. You can download it now. Reboot after install! If you keep on not getting any sound, delete the app from your device by long-tapping Noise.io's icon, then hitting the X sign at the top left corner of the icon, then going to AppStore and pressing on "buy" in Noise.io again (you will not be charged any money twice)

This update has a dramatic story. We fully understand the shortcomings induced by the absense of audio in OS3.0. We rewrote the main synth core and submitted the update 2 weeks before the official release of OS3.0.

However, due to the reasons we apparently will never know, it took more than a month for Apple to approve the update for one of the most popular music apps in the store. We never received any explanation.

Once again: we at Amidio, Inc. are very, very sorry for this situation. That was not our fault, but in any case we will find a way to compensate. Most probably, we will release one of our next apps with a big discount for several first days of the sales, and will let you know through another email.

By the way, our next-to-be-released-app is called Hexatone, which is the new generation drum machine.

P.S. Recently, Apple also approved our game called Hot Dancer (it has been waiting 6 months). Hot Dancer's soundtrack has been composed by Toyo Bunko with the partial usage of Noise.io. You can get Hot Dancer here.

Thanks!

Noise.io Pro 1.3 out now!
Published: March 20, 2009

Dear Noise addicts,

Noise.io Pro 1.3 is available for download from AppStore now.

Among changes are:

+ You can now record with the metronome click (requested by many of you)
+ Settings are now located not separately, but inside Noise.io (button next to the Main Menu button)

Please remember to reenter your username and password in the new Settings menu!

+ Totally reworked Record menu.

Record menu now includes "File Browser", the same module that you will find in all upcoming Amidio apps.

Use File Browser to:

+ Export files to ioLibrary
+ Rename/delete/view/play files
+ Load files to play along with
+ Start server over wi-fi

Every app has it's own sandbox ("Local Session") and global shared place ("ioLibrary").
When you record something, it falls into the Local Session. If you want to export it to Beatmaker or as .wav, locate the file within the Local Session folder and press "export".

"Start Server" is now inside the File Browser. It allows to download/upload 44100 Hz 16Bit samples to/from ioLibrary.

Locate any sample and press "Load" to load it as a background loop. (Yes now you can load your own loops to play along with!)

With this new scheme, "Undo" for "overdub" does not exist anymore.

New User Manual is on the way. Stay tuned!

FEATURES OVERVIEW

***This is not a final feature list. We can still change it a bit (adding something) and of course we will add more pictures soon!***

Before proceeding to the Feature List - we would like to underline that Noise.io is a completely new kind of a musical instrument.

Noise.io does not reflect or copy any existing synth structure, design or principles.

We've designed Noise.io to become the true 21st century synth. So you won't find any "VCO" or "VCF"-like abbreviations.
There are no knobs! ("omg! synth with no knobs?! how can that be?!" )

We've tried to simplify everything down, in order to let the musicians create, instead of reading manuals. And - thanks to the iPhone excellent features - we've designed several new interface elements, which are through all the Noise.io's Editor. You can read about them in the Highlights section.

  • Latency close to ZERO!

...there are so many features that it is quite possible that we've forgot something

...any questions? Ask them in our forum!

What kinds of sounds is it possible to create with Noise.io?

To tell the truth, at the moment we ourselves at Amidio have not yet explored all the sonic possibilities of Noise.io. However the range of sounds is broadened by Noise.io's monophonic nature. So creating multi-layered "mega chords" will be possible only if you record separate pitches with the same envelopes and then layer them up in a DAW (digital audio workstation).

But, Noise.io is suitable for almost all other things:

  • basses (fat, squeaky, punchy, deep, low, hollow, fretless, kicking)
  • 303-like basslines (with even more mood due to multi-glide functions)
  • leads (melodic, vibrating, mesmerizing)
  • keys (epiano-alikes, trance pikes, vibes)
  • bells (harmonic and inharmonic bells, chimes and mallets)
  • sound effects (swooshes, mystical noises, distorted realities)
  • percussive sounds (atonal percussion, drum sounds, snares, hihats, even bass drums)
  • ...and many, many more!

Please remember that after creating a sound, you can fire up Pitch Sequencer and create a melody using that instrument!

 Suggested Usage

 Sound Quality

Simply connect the sound output of your iPhone/iPod touch to the mic/line input of your mixer, recorder or sound card - and there you are, now you can enrich your tracks or mixes with superb melodies, sequences or sound effects that blow away people's minds, making your perfomance unique and unforgettable.

All you need is Noise.io, line phone jack cable and your fingers. The quality of sound you will get depends on the quality of the cable and your A/D converter but even with not too expensive equipment, it is really *very* good, comparable to the quality of hardware synths.

Noise.io is fully ready for live perfomances. In fact, it has been initially designed for live perfomances.

We have conducted several blind tests between Noise.io and some well-known hardware synths (of course we can not tell which synths in particular).

We offered people (musicians and non-musicians) to choose which sound they liked best (they did not know the source of the sound they listened to).

  • In most cases, the people couldn't distinguish between Noise.io and hardware synths.
  • Most people have agreed that Noise.io has a "warm and pleasant sound, without any evident digital harshness".

  • After revealing, most people were amazed that "such a small device can sound like a real synth".
